As our parents grow older, one small thing that becomes surprisingly difficult is getting proper meals every day. Many elderly people do not enjoy takeaway food that much. It is often too oily, too salty, or simply does not taste like the food they grew up eating. At the same time, cooking daily can also become tiring for them. Over the past few months, while speaking with many families around SS areas, Damansara, Mont Kiara, and Subang Jaya, we realised that a lot of people quietly face the same challenge. They want their parents to eat simple, warm, homemade food, but balancing work, family, and caregiving can be difficult. Here are 5 simple ways families are helping their elderly parents eat better every day.
1. Choose familiar homemade meals
For many elderly parents, comfort matters more than variety. Dishes like steamed fish, soft braised chicken, vegetable stir fries, or simple curries are often preferred because they remind them of meals they have eaten their whole lives. When food feels familiar, they are more likely to enjoy their meals and eat properly.
As your parents age, heavy and oily meals can be harder to digest. Many families now look for meals like ours which are: • Less oily • Lower in salt • Cooked fresh • Similar to home cooking These small adjustments can make a big difference in how comfortable someone feels after eating.
One thing we noticed from families is that planning meals weekly reduces a lot of stress. Instead of wondering every day what to order or cook, having a simple weekly meal arrangement ensures elderly parents always have something warm to eat during the weekdays. It also removes the need to rely on last minute takeaway orders.
One beautiful thing we discovered while working around Klang Valley is how many home chefs cook small batches of food for nearby families with elderly parents. These meals often feel very different from restaurant takeaway because they are prepared in a home kitchen with the same care someone would cook for their own family. Many families appreciate this because the food feels closer to real home cooking.
For many elderly parents, food is not just about nutrition. It is about feeling cared for. When someone ensures they have warm meals every day, it brings a small sense of comfort knowing that someone thought about them Sometimes, something as simple as a reliable homemade lunch arriving at the door can make a big difference to their day.
At Hawkr, we have been working with home chefs around Damansara, SS areas, Mont Kiara, Subang Jaya, and nearby neighbourhoods to help families connect with homemade meals for their loved ones. Many of our customers actually started because they wanted their parents or grandparents to have proper home cooked food during the week without relying on takeaway.
